Looking after it

Down jackets

Air it rather than wash it. When it does need a wash: mild detergent, gentle cycle, then tumble dry low with two clean tennis balls to bring the loft back. Skip dry cleaning unless the label asks for it.

Wool & cashmere

Fold, never hang — hangers stretch the shoulders and shape. Air after wearing, spot clean small marks, and dry clean only when it genuinely needs it.

Cotton & garment dye

Wash cold and inside out to protect prints and faded finishes. Hang to dry. The tumble dryer is what turns a beautiful washed colour flat.

Leather & suede

Keep it dry and away from direct sun. Brush suede with a suede brush in one direction. Stuff shoes with paper between wears to hold their shape.
